Along with the iconic AE86, the TE72 Corolla has grown to become a very sought after and popular car to restore, race, or show at various car events around the world. With its simple body lines and compact stature, this variant on the fourth generation Corolla provides a refreshing canvas for enthusiasts to be creative.
Justin is one such enthusiast who has taken a modest and functional approach with his 1980 TE72 Toyota Corolla, which has become instantly recognizable among drivers all around Washington State. With a gutted interior and freshly rebuilt motor, Justin has built his Corolla that is appreciated both on the track and at a standstill. Along with his Corolla, Justin is also the owner/operator of sticker and apparel company, Always Reckless, and co-owner of handcrafted beard oil supplier, Purveyors of Party.
Although the body might look less than ideal, it is the mismatched panels, dings, dents, and typical flaws of age that sincerely add an almost human quality to the car. You get the impression that it was built by an individual and not by a machine, and there is a deep admiration and value for that level of handcrafted care.
The Corolla’s stance is an ideal combination of vehicle height and wheel fitment, creating an appearance that looks absolutely perfect. The look is not overly aggressive or wild, but correctly lowered to a point that rightfully compliments the Corolla’s overall presence.
Motorcycle carburetors make for an interesting addition and sound to the motor. Apparently, the carburetors are a common modification in the TE72 community, and we were very intrigued with this aspect of Justin’s car.
Watching Justin’s car take shape and evolve is inspiring. Doing most, if not all, of the work in his garage and sourcing parts wherever he can, Justin’s story with his Corolla is one of humble roots, modest upbringings, and focused passion between a man and his car. You truly get the sense that Justin built his Corolla for only himself, an unpretencious attitude that is admirable and apparent in both Justin’s personality and in the Corolla’s demeanor.
We definitely look forward to the next stages of Justin’s build. It is a process that always seems to be a work in progress, and we are ecstatic to witness and share the next iteration.
