There’s a sense of mystery and intrigue when it comes to a place like Garage Autohero. Proclaimed as one of the Pacific Northwest’s premier multipurpose performance shops, Garage Autohero has earned a massive reputation for building some of the most successful and well-known drift cars competing in various local and national events, most notably Formula DRIFT.
Roland Gallagher, Derrik Pompeo, Rob Primo, and Walker Wilkerson have all had their cars built by Garage Autohero with exceptional quality, reliability, and care in mind. In addition to developing many high-profile drift machines, Garage Autohero is also known for building and modifying classic Datsuns (most notably the 510), mopeds, and motorcycles, many of which had earned the shop its initial fame and popularity many years ago.
Even with all of its prestige for building a wide variety of exceptional automobiles and motorcycles, the shop itself is as unassuming and secretive, especially with its undisclosed location and plain exterior, as its shop owner and sole operator, Ray Stonehocker.
When one has the privilege of walking into Garage Autohero, Ray’s passion and fanaticism for all things Japanese, especially for classic Datsuns, is immediately apparent. The shop is filled with numerous builds and projects of varying levels of completion, each carefully prepared, managed, and built solely by Ray. With an incredibly long list of projects, as illustrated in the pictures here, Ray is always working on something. From small modifications to massive rebuilds and restorations, Ray is always in a constant state of motion where progress is an everyday occurrence.
With the numerous builds and countless man-hours invested, Ray is, to us, the purest and most honest example of an artisan. There is nothing flashy about Ray or Garage Autohero; he let’s his work, and the numerous builds coming in and out of his shop, speak volumes about his skills, experience, knowledge, and, most importantly, passion. This sort of passion translates into a body of work that has garnered the respect and admiration of countless enthusiasts.
All who know Ray stand by to his abilities with the utmost trust, so much so that everyone will tell you to … “Just take it to Ray.”
